Did You Know?
Mapperley’s name comes from Thomas Mapurley, a prominent figure in Nottingham during the 14th century. He served as under-sheriff of Nottinghamshire and even held the role of Mayor of Nottingham in the early 1400s.
In the late 19th century, Mapperley Hall was built by the Wright family, whose estate played a central role in the development of the area. By the early 20th century, parts of the estate were sold for housing, paving the way for the Mapperley we know today.
Mapperley once included large swaths of common land and farmland, which over time developed into today’s residential streets and parks. The area’s development is a testament to Nottingham’s rich heritage.
